Waking Up Tired

Getting home to find Steph had already left for work annoyed Mark. He’d worked his butt off to get back early enough to talk to his boss and his boss had already left. Still earlier than usual he hoped to get home before Steph had left for work but missed her by mere minutes from what he could tell.

As much as he needed his sleep, as much as he knew a night on the road without a proper sleep was not just annoying but it was dangerous, he was prepared to make an effort today. Instead of doing the housework and his other usual jobs Mark decided he’d go straight to bed, sleep until Steph got home then remain awake all night just to spend time with Steph before he went for work. It meant screwing around with his body clock but he wanted to do it. Needed to do it!

Waking up after only dropping off for short periods of sleep between tossing and turning Mark yet again rolled over and felt the empty bed. He looked at the clock, saw it was only a few minuted until Steph would be home, remembered what his plan was and decided to get out of bed.

Oh, the nights are long
And I’m so tired of waking up tired,
Man, they just drag on and on
And I’m so tired of waking up tired.
The company I’m keeping
Won’t let me get my sleep in.

He thinks his nights are long, the bugger ought to try mine.
Tonight is going to be especially long after such a shitty day’s sleep and so long awake before going to work.
Doesn’t make it easier given how annoyed I’m getting with the job.
The company I keep over the night isn’t so bad because I spent most of my nights alone in the truck
The company I keep when I get back to the depot leaves a lot to be desired though.

Oh, I hate the light
And I’m so tired of waking up tired.
The morning sun is getting way too bright
And I’m so tired of waking up tired.
If I was worth a fortune
I’d never leave my bedroom
I just want to stay right here, safe and sound.

Oh yeah, spend most of your waking hours in the darkness and then watch the sunrise, there is nothing beautiful about it!
If I was worth a fortune I’d pay someone else to wake up for me.
I’d have to leave my bedroom occasionally, although if I could convince Steph to stay there with me things would be different
Covered up in the doona is such a wonderful place. I wonder if I can convince Steph to join me before dinner.

Oh, I have to go
But I’m so tired of waking up tired.
The lights are on but there is no-one home
‘Cause I’m so wired from waking up tired.
I need a month of Sundays
To help me cope with Mondays,
I just want to stay right here, safe and sound.
Blankets pulled up to my ears, safe and sound.

Every morning when the sun comes up it does feel a bit like the lights are on and no one is at home.
But that has nothing to do with waking up, it has to do with being awake.
A month of Sundays? Takes me three or four days off to get over the shift work bug.
Then takes me three or four days to get back in to it so as not to be a danger to myself or others on the road.
If only I could lay here with the blankets around my ears forever

I need a good vacation
From too much recreation.

Who has time for recreation?

Oh, I’m late again
And I’m so tired, might even get fired.
I could blame it on a cancelled train
But I won’t try it, I know they won’t buy it.

Don’t want to get fired but, they can take this job and shove it!
Bugger the cancelled train, my train has gone off the rails.
I’d rather get the train back on the rails than keep this crappy job, maybe fired isn’t so bad.
There may have been no promises made to quit but dammit I still meant it.

If I was worth a fortune
I’d never leave my bedroom until next June!
I just want to stay right here, safe and sound.
Blankets pulled up to my ears, safe and sound.
I just want to stay right here, safe and sound.

Maybe I’ll just call out to Steph, let her know I’m awake and safe and sound, she might rush in.
Maybe instead of spending time on the lounge before going to work we’ll get to lay here with the blankets pulled up to our ears.
Is that her car pulling into the driveway?
