Throw Your Arms Around Me

Story continues from here
Story began here

Mark rolled over in the bed, alone again, but sadly he was used to it. He’d been trying hopelessly for months to try and get out of his shitty job, he wanted to spend more time with Steph, he wanted to be with her and he wanted a family. But jobs were scarce and he valued the one he had, but that didn’t mean he had to like it.

The job as much as the shared attitude between him and Steph was making things difficult, he hated that, he was sure Steph did too but this rocky road was not one made out of chocolate. If it was Steph would have demolished it before it became too rough.

Stretching his weary bones before getting out of bed his mind started to wander.

hr2

I will come for you at nighttime
I will raise you from your sleep
I will kiss you in four places
As I go running along your street

He didn’t want to ‘come for her’ at night time, he wanted to be there, be there all the time. He’d kiss her in a hundred places. He’d kiss her anywhere she wanted whether she was awake or asleep. But the damn job didn’t allow him to be there any more than one night a week.

He’d heard from more people than he cared to count that coming off permanent night shift can be as damaging as being on it. Body clocks don’t adjust, sleeping patterns are screwed forever and a day and the feelings of lethargy and inability to function like ‘normal’ people all played havoc with relationships. Often such changes laid on just as much stress as the job itself. But he needed change, he needed to get back to a normal. He just hoped he could handle the change if it happened. He also hoped Steph could handle it.

hr2

I will squeeze the life out of you
You will make me laugh and make me cry
And we will never forget it
You will make me call your name

“STEPH!” Mark’s mind called out loudly as the words rattled around his head. I want nothing more than to hold you, maybe not squeeze the life out of you because that would defeat the purpose of holding you.

hr2

And I’ll shout it to the blue summer sky
And we may never meet again
So shed your skin and let’s get started
And you will throw your arms around me

Yeah, you will throw your arms around me
I dreamed of you at nighttime
And I watched you in your sleep
I met you in high places

He longed to watch her sleep, longed to dream of her as he laid next to her.

Throwing the doona back and kicking his legs out of the bed Mark decided he didn’t care what his boss would say, didn’t care if he was late for work again. Steph meant more to him than any crappy job and he was going out to the lounge where he knew she’d be and if she didn’t throw her arms around him, he would throw his around her.

hr2

I touched your head and touched your feet
So if you disappear out of view
You know I will never say goodbye
And though I try to forget it

“I wonder if she knows that her gently touch every night before I leave for work is the only thing that gets me through the night?”

“I wonder if she knows that despite I have to say good bye and hit the road, it’s never really good bye because every time she touches me I take a little bit of her to work with me?”

Have I ever told her?

hr2

You will make me call your name
And I’ll shout it to the blue summer sky
And we may never meet again
So shed your skin and let’s get started

And you will throw your arms around me
Yeah, you will throw your arms around me
Oh, yeah
Oh yeah

You will throw your arms around me
Yeah, you will throw your arms around me

Not even bothering to get dress Mark walked out the bedroom and made a bee line to the couch where Steph sat half asleep in front of the TV. Saying nothing he stood before her with his arms open.

“Baby I love you! I’m going to quit work so I can be home with you every night.”
