Friday 15 November

Shit what’s that?
Flashing lights?
Crap it’s the cops.
No one other vehicles in sight, they must want me.
I’ll pull onto the shoulder up there where the road widens.
Wonder who it is that couldn’t wait until Daly Store before they got their bread delivery.

hr2

Gday Frank, what’s up. The flashing lights, even out here are a bit much just for free bread aren’t they?
Huh?
No I didn’t I see you sitting on the side of the road as I came through Smithsville?
Did I come through Smithsville already?
Shit I honestly don’t remember coming through the town or seeing you.
Nah I couldn’t have been asleep, not for the best part of 10ks and on a road with bends on it.
I was speeding too?
85 in a 60 zone you say?
Bloody hell, I know the speedo in this thing is out but I reckon I’d have noticed that.
Don’t be silly I couldn’t have been asleep.
Nah haven’t been drinking, if I had you wouldn’t have woken me with your flashing lights!
Siren as well?
Bloody hell where was I?
Yeah no worries I’ll blow in the bag.
Yeah figured I’d be safe, haven’t had a drink all week.
Man I just can’t believe what your telling me.
You’re not going to give me a ticket?
Mate thanks, that is a relief.
Hey I don’t suppose you could get that radar out and clock me coming up to the Daly store just to see how far this speedo is out?
Cool thanks Frank, I’ll bring the usual delivery into the station later on.
Yeah if I stay awake, thanks smart arse!!

“Yeah it’s me.”
“What do you mean what am I doing calling you at 3am?”
“You’re the boss, I’m calling to tell you I’ve got a flat tyre.”
“Of course I’ve called the tyre mob, they’ll be here in about an hour.”
“I didn’t want you to panic when you got a bill for a tyre call out.”
“Of course it could have waited until later, but why should only one of us be awake while I wait for a service truck?”
“Hello? Hello? Damn mobile phones that keep cutting out!”

Monday July 14

Oh I like this song!

It’s an unexplained devotion,
That makes you climb behind the wheel.
And guide 40 tons of missile,
From the coast to Camooweal.
It’s the feel of turbo muscle,
That gets into your bones.
It’s the romance of the long haul,
Bein’ out there on your own.

Romance? What scares me most is that being out there really is like a romance,
Once you get caught up in it you just want to keep going back.
As insane as it makes me there is not much like the lonely country road at night.

We are Sons of the Road,
Like brothers we are bound.
To the rhythm of the highway,
An’ a rumblin diesel sound.
And down that long white line,
Together we will roll.
We stand united,
Sons of the Road.

What about the tyres on the bitumen Travis?
They are part of the rhythm as much as the diesel engine!

There’s a long tradition
From the days when the bullock teams
Would haul loads across the outback,
‘Cross flats and steep ravines.
We carry on the journey,
Of those pioneers gone by.
With 22 wheels on bitumen,
And 25 tons behind .

We are Sons of the Road,
Like brothers we are bound.
To the rhythm of the highway,
An’ a rumblin diesel sound.
And down that long white line,
Together we will roll.
We stand united,
Sons of the Road.
We stand united,
Sons of the Road.

With 22 wheels on bitumen
And 25 tons behind.
Man I’m going to be singing that for the rest of the night!
